State of the Anime: May 2020

May 30, 2020

Woah, what is this?

State of the Anime is something I want to try out every month where I do a quick overview of anime, manga and other things I'm watching or interested in. These are in no particular order, I just kind of jot down notes as I go.

Without further ado, let's get started.

Tenki no Ko (Weathering With You)

Movie

The top hit from the makers of Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.) comes a story about a girl who has the powers to control rain. If you haven't watch a Makoto Shinkai movie before, it's definitely worth trying it out.

I've been meaning to rewatch this movie now that the Blu-ray has been officially released, but the first time I watched it was... an interesting experience to say the least.

A friend and I ended up watching this in a format called 4DX. If you've never heard of it before, it's basically the movie but with light effects, tilting chairs, water sprayers (and since this was a movie with a lot of rain it was going off quite often) and other knick-knacks.

Taken from their website:

4DX equipped auditoriums employ motion enabled chairs, which create strong vibrations and sensations, as well as other environmental controls for simulated weather or other conditions, such as lightning, rain, flashing (strobe) lights, fog and strong scents.

I wouldn't say I wouldn't consider ever going again, but I honestly didn't do any research before going in to see this movie in this format -- I thought it would be a pretty standard experience. I'd give it a solid good/10.

Tenki no Ko was definitely worth the watch. Not only do the visuals continue to be top tier, but the soundtrack is something worth listening to post-movie as well. ✨

To quote a comment from the video above:

Just came back from theater. My body was covered by goosebumps when this song sounded as they were falling from sky

I definitely agree. Listening to this song before watching the movie was relaxing. Listening to this song during the movie was captivating. Listening to this song after the movie was an emotional roller-coaster.

Kami no Tou (Tower of God)

Anime

This one is an interesting one. I tend to watch anime that's more geared towards rom-coms and shoujo so this one was a bit rarer. I've been recommended to read the original source manhua before, and to be fair it's been on my to read list for a while, but I just never got around to getting started.

Kami no Tou tells the story of the main character Bam, who is following the footsteps of Rachel up a tower that offers a promise of granting a person any wish upon reaching the top.

Art work is decent, story line is going well so far. I've heard some concerns on how well the adaptation would be so I'll be curious to see how others feel about it when it finishes.

At the time of writing I'd give it a solid good/10.

Taiyou no Ie (House of the Sun)

Taiyou no Ie is a shoujo slice-of-life manga.

I have a slight weakness against a good shoujo manga, and somehow this one missed my radar early on. Currently about a third of the way through, I enjoy reading about Mao's daily struggles living with Hiro, a childhood friend of hers as she learns to accept the feelings she develops and works towards mending her relationship with her father.

Looking forward to finish reading this soon. good/10.
